intensive care sleep EKG and SpO2 monitoring

Of the huge number of videos available about blood pressure monitoring here is one which I particularly liked.

i finally got a monitor that has an SpO2 (pulse oximetry) module as well… so you can not only see my EKG, but also my respiratory frequency AND oxygen saturation! =) i also got a NIBP (non-invasive blood pressure) module, but it’ll be about two weeks until i have the fitting adapter for it. then i will be able to monitor EKG, RESP, SpO2, NIBP. yay! \o/

Accuracy of Blood Pressure Monitors

There is no visible way one can understand changes in human blood pressure, and naturally, checking regularly is the only means to keep track of it. The blood pressure results can predict the risks for your body and health, thereby enabling your physician to suggest ideal food, work, and sleep schedules for you.

Different blood pressure monitors provide different readings. The most common blood pressure monitor uses a column of mercury to gauge the blood pressure with a hand pump attached to the arm of the patient. When you pump this, the blood pressure monitor tightens on your arm. Readings taken by this device are usually accurate. But a disadvantage with this type of mercury-based blood pressure monitor is that accidental spilling of mercury can cause various allergic reactions and illness.

Even though many types of blood pressure monitors are available on the market, mercury-based pressure gauges are more dependable and widely used. But in a technology-driven society where electronic gadgets are exceedingly popular, mercury pressure devices are fast replaced by aneroid and electronic blood pressure monitors. The cuff that is used to attach the device to the arm is important, too. A narrow cuff gives high blood pressure reading, while a broader cuff gives a lower reading. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury. It represents the force of blood exerted on blood vessel walls.

In order to ensure that these new devices provide accurate data, they should be calibrated and validated periodically. Calibration ensures that measurements start from zero on all occasions. It is important that you check the blood pressure monitor you use for accuracy.

High Blood Pressure – What Do the Numbers Mean

Has your doctor told you that your blood pressure is too high and then started quoting numbers to you like ’140 over 90′ and it should be ’120 over 80′. You give the doctor a strange look but the doctor didn’t explain what the numbers meant… or you have just heard blood pressure numbers mentioned in general conversation and wondered what they meant.

Well… the first number, which is always the higher number, is the systolic reading. Now let’s say it is 140, which is a pressure of 140 millimetres of mercury and refers to the pressure that your heart pumps blood or the pressure applied to the walls of the arteries and blood vessels when the heart is contracting and squeezing the blood out.

The second number, which is always the lower number is the diastolic reading and refers to the resting blood pressure or the pressure when the heart is relaxing between heartbeats.

Millimetres of mercury is a standard of measurement, and at the risk of putting you to sleep is defined as “the pressure exerted at the base of a column of fluid exactly 1 millimetre high, when the density of the fluid is exactly 13.5951 g/cm3, at a place where the acceleration of gravity is exactly 9.80665 m/s2″.

To you and I, millimetres of mercury has no practical meaning other than a reference point to what your ideal pressure should be. You are considered to have high blood pressure when the systolic reading is above 140 millimetres of mercury and a diastolic reading above 90 millimetres of mercury. A typical adult is considered to have optimal blood pressure when the readings are 120 over 80.

What Are The Symptoms of High Blood Pressure
The thing about high blood pressure is there are usually no symptoms until it becomes dangerously high and you start to experience symptoms like severe headaches. High blood pressure is referred to as the silent killer because until you have it tested and get those numbers, you are usually not aware that it is high, and it could have been high for a long time with you being unaware that anything was wrong.

37 weeks blood pressure goes up and down but dr. has an excuse for everything?

disgurlchrissy asked:

So im 37 weeks pregnant. I have my own blood pressure monitor which ive checked with the dr to make sure it reads correctly. I check my bp a few times a day. In the evening, nights when i sleep, and in the mornings it gets pretty high. Up to 150/93, but during the day it goes down to about 135/80. When i go to my dr visits a few times its been around 140/80 or so, but they have me lay on my left side, it goes down, so they record the lower bp reading. They had me do a 24 hr urine test to check for protein. They said everything was good, i dont have preeclampsia, but why does my blood pressure keep getting high? Ive had bad blurry spots/vision problems and headaches 3 times this past week…they said it could just be hormones, and my bp could just be getting high bc im overdoing it and maybe im sleeping on my back. But…im not doing anything overactive, nor can i sleep on my back because it hurts too bad. What should i do? Im just worried about my baby, because they said if ur bp is high oxygen and nutrients dont get to the placenta, causing ur baby not to grow. How high does ur blood pressure have to get before this is a problem?

High blood pressure during pregnancy?

Michael’s Mommy born 3/23/09 asked:

I’m trying very hard not to worry, because I know that stress only makes my blood pressure higher. I’m 28 weeks pregnant and my last OB visit they said that my pressure was high, but there were no proteins in my urine. I bought myself a blood pressure monitor and I check my pressure periodically. If I do something like sit with my feet up for an hour or go for a walk I’ll check it after to see how different activities effect it. I’ve been keeping a little journal to show my OB next visit. Anyway, I got my highest reading yesterday after doing some house cleaning which involved minimal physical strain (144/110) at about 3pm, then later that evening, at about 10:30pm I measured it again after I’d been sitting down and relaxing at it was a lot lower (113/62). I’m concerned these findings will lead my doctor to put me on bed rest, because that’s what everyone is saying will happen. I’m the only source of income in my house and I don’t have enough sick leave to take the next 3-5 months off work. Has anyone had a similar situation? What happened? What did you do? I’m going to do what’s best for my son, but I’m hoping that we can avoid losing my income.
So far nothing has worried me to the point that I would call my OB. As for work, I actually get paid to sleep, so I suppose I could continue to work with bedrest. I just wondered if anyone else had had a similar situation.
Ok, well I’m glad someone with experience finally answered. My blood pressure is typically 140/85 when I’m up and around, which seemed so high to me… and 130/80 when i’m resting, sometimes lower, but i haven’t really tried to actually have “resting” times, i forget and do something then remember to take my pressure.

Is it safe to take Provigil if you have high blood pressure?

danman4472 asked:

I have high blood pressure and take Toprol for it. My doctor is concerned about the possibility of Provigil causing heart palpatations. Is it safe to take Provigil if you have high blood pressure? I’m going to get a sleep study done soon. Even if I come out negative for sleep apnea, could I still benefit from taking Provigil?

What are some things that could be causing hypertension/high blood pressure?

jennylane1965 asked:

I am curious if anyone knows what kinds of things can cause high blood pressure, even temporary. I’ve heard of sleep deprivation causing it, but it doesnt seem like not getting enough sleep could cause you to have a real blood pressure problem. Could caffeine or soda consumption affect your blood pressure?

Does the treatment of high blood pressure cause insomnia?

bliss22 asked:

I take betablocker (Toprop XL) for high blood pressure and also a statin (Lovastatin) for high cholesterol. I have noticed quite a decrease in the amount and quality of my sleep . It is difficult for me to fall asleep, I wake up during the night, and I wake up early feeling tired. My question to a professional is: is there a connection?
Thanks.
