Question posed by babu: Are battery operated digital wrist held blood pressure monitors accurate compared to old mercury type?
I have recently bought a Braun battery operated wrist held digital blood pressure monitor to check pressure at home. Many persons say that these digital types are not accurate compared to old conventional mercury type. Then I checked and compared the readings of both types at same time and both gave different readings. Can anyone please advise whether the digital types give accurate readings or not ?.

Do electronic blood pressure monitors give false high readings?

A question from Vik-as: Do electronic blood pressure monitors give false high readings?
I have noticed that electronic high blood pressure monitors give me higher readings than I get in the doctor’s office. A couple of people I have talked to said the same thing. Have any of you noticed this?
johnnylakis- I am referring to the ones that I use at home. The one I have, though, does happen to be from CVS.

If you mean the ones at CVS and Walmart where you stick your arm in, they are unreliable because they are over used and not serviced. If you mean the kind you buy and use at home, those are reliable and give a reasonably accurate reading.

Question by lucy: How good are at home Blood Pressure Monitors?
My husbands doctor wants him to monitor is pressure its 20 points lower than at the doctor 145/95 and at home its 125/85 it says in book it can vary 30-50 points how can that be my husband just started pressure meds this week or is it that these at home monitors are not that good do you have to spend a lot of money to have it be better? When is the best time to take it thank-you

If the cuff size is not right for your husband it can change his blood pressure, they are not one size fits all…… you might want to look into that. Nerves at the docs office can also raise the pressure. Taking it manually is pretty easy if you’re interested….and can be cheaper than buying a new machine, let me know if you need help.

i have a really good one. it cost about 100$ . do their reading’s tend to run higher or lower than your blood pressure actually is?
well, the trend is my bottom number seems to be higher. i am taking an alpha-beta blocker. what does this mean?

There is no way of answering this because some run high and some run low. These home monitors are just that – they “monitor” trends in your blood pressure so that you can see your doctor and give them an idea of where your blood pressures have been running. Your doctor wants to know trends (say your top number is consistently in the 150′s), not exact numbers. Then, your doctor knows that he needs to adjust your blood pressure medications so that your top number can be lower.

Health professionals always use an electronic monitoring device on me and then tell me my blood pressure is way too high. Then when the doctor comes in I tell him his staff used the electronic device-he says they are rarely accurate and takes mine manually. What a surprise, as my new bp count is normal. So I avoid electronic devices, but if you must, the wrist ones are really inaccurate from my experience.

They are pretty accurate but to be sure- take your monitor to the drugstore where they have the arm blood pressure machine you can use for free- check it on that machine and then check yours- they should be about the same and if not, keep note of what the variable is and use your wrist machine with that variable in mind.
