Picking Blood Pressure Monitors For Personal Use

Blood pressure monitors are standard equipment at a doctor’s office or hospital. Since deviations from normal pressure may signal serious health problems and elevated risks of heart attack and stroke, taking a reading is standard procedure during a check-up.

It is also a good idea to have a BP monitor at home if you have any major health concerns. Institutions such as the Mayo Clinic recommend that individuals with a history of high pressure track their readings regularly. In addition to having up to date information, performing the simple task at home will serve as a reminder that lifestyle choices and prescribed medications are important. In the case of sudden changes in routine readings, you can get in touch with your doctor without waste of time.

Having regular readings will also provide information you and your doctor can use to determine if you are benefiting from losing weight, regular exercise, or taking medication. Your doctor may use your records to determine if you are taking the right medicine in the right dosage. In addition, you will know if your pressure goes up when you visit the doctor, after meals, or when you are under stress.

The Mayo Clinic and other experts recommend tracking your pressure at home to see if life style changes are working or to see if medication is having an effect. Good results with exercise and diet may motivate you to continue improving your health with drug-free methods, while seeing that medicines are effective is better than blindly continuing on the wrong drug or dosage.

Sometimes individuals will get high readings at the doctor’s office, especially if there is anxiety involved or if you have to climb stairs to get to the right floor. Tracking your readings at home will let you know if you actually do have a condition that needs medication. All medicines have side effects, so you will not want to take anything you do not need. You also can see if any medication you must use is working, and if it is, you may want to try a reduced dosage.

There are manual monitors, but the automatic ones are easier to use. They will take the reading for you, and many will inflate and deflate automatically as well. Choosing one of the blood pressure monitors with large digital displays makes reading your numbers easy, and many will also let you keep a record of your scores for days or months.

Choosing the right blood pressure monitor for your personal use can be a tough thing to do. The Omron HEM-712C Blood Pressure Monitor is a reliable monitor for at home use. The Omron HEM-712C gives clear blood pressure readings to assist both you and your doctor.

Now I don’t want to take my medication because I feel that my doctor is wrong. To prove him wrong I need to purchase the best digital home blood pressure monitor. It needs to be really accurate. Any good recommendation?

Is it possible the size of my arm could be throwing off my blood pressure reading?

Jessica B asked:

I have a blood pressure monitor that is an Omron wrist monitor and have found its slightly lower but relatively accurate with the doctors reading. However, i will use a cuff store bought monitor and get readings absurdly higher, for example 164/111 while I get 128/90 on the wrist monitor. I had one of my grandparents try both to see what happened to them and their readings between the two monitors did not differ. How is this possible? I do have a relatively chubby arm, could it be possible its hard for the monitor to get through to my artery to get a true reading? or maybe something else?

Why am I getting conflicting blood pressure readings?

Diane asked:

I am a 37-year-old female. Hypertension runs high in my family, but usually later in life (like the 50′s). Nevertheless, I have a blood pressure monitor at home and the readings range from 104/70 to 115/75. At my gyno’s office the other day, the reading was 114/70; however, several days later at my GI doc’s office, they took the reading on my wrist and it read 150/94! What is the deal here? (It may be worth it to note that the GI doc’s office staff are very rude and make me very angry when I go in there, so I’m thinking that’s why my B/P reads so high over there, but is fine elsewhere.)

Free Blood Pressure Monitors

Blood pressure monitors have been in use for a long time now, but different devices provide different readings. Among the various health problems, blood pressure variations and related problems are some of the most serious.

In order to study and evaluate a patient’s general condition or cardiac condition, some treatment schedules ask for a round-the-clock blood pressure checks, which requires that a blood pressure gauge be kept with the patient continuously. This is known as ABPM (Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring.) ABPM records blood pressure using an automatic blood pressure monitor that is attached to the arm of the patient.

Blood pressure monitoring device manufacturers have developed low cost and use-and-throw blood pressure monitors that are easy to operate and that give almost error-free readings. Free blood pressure monitoring devices mostly run on batteries and can be easily carried around by patients or doctors. These automatic blood pressure monitors convert pressure readings to electronic waves that are measurable. Most of them are digital devices with clear displays.

Free blood pressure monitors that enable users to take readings on their own are gaining popularity. Recent developments have produced free digital blood pressure monitors that are fully automatic. Generally, blood pressure monitors should be error corrected at regular intervals, and free blood pressure monitors are no exception.

Although blood pressure monitors were originally meant for use inside hospital surgery rooms, they have now become very common instruments even in homes and offices where you can use them comfortably. Needless to say, free blood pressure monitors have made life much easier for patients as well as doctors.
