How can I reduce my high blood pressure while avoiding prescription medication?

A question asked by happichappi: How can I reduce my high blood pressure while avoiding prescription medication?
I have recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure. I suspect it is a blend of stress and genetics. I would like to steer away from taking long term prescription meds. Any suggestions or links to medical trials done on this subject recently? Personal experiences are welcome.

Best answer:

Answer by Helen
I would really take the advice of your doctor – I can understand your reluctance about longterm medication but if your BP is disastrously high (mine was 197/141 and I was about to blow!!) then you really must take the meds not to do so is like playing Russian roulette.

Self help would be to limit salt – but steer clear of Lo-Salt etc as most of these can cause problems with meds. Learn a relaxation technique and do some gentle exercise. But this is self help and not a cure. Please be guided by your GP.

What can I do to combat low blood pressure besides drinking coffee?

A question from Disinterested: What can I do to combat low blood pressure besides drinking coffee?
I have low blood pressure and it leaves me feeling tired constantly even when I’m well rested. Coffee seems to wake me up for like 20 minutes and then I feel even more tired than before I drank it.

Best answer:

Answer by J B
Increasing your daily water intake can help. Coffee is a diuretic and removes water from your body, thus lowering your blood pressure even more. If you are not physically fit, starting an exercise program may reduce your fatigue each day – walking is easiest. And, a slight increase in your salt intake will cause some water retention which can also raise your blood pressure slightly. Your doctor should be helping you with your symptoms.

Can anyone answer my question about Blood Pressure?

A question from lovingmomhappykids: Can anyone answer my question about Blood Pressure?
First let me say I just started seeing a cardiologist and I am scheduled for more testing next week. I have been having chest pains and I had a small heart beat irregularity. The Cardiologist thinks it is benign, but I am having a stess test and an echo on Wednesday. He just wants to rule out a blockage, because I have never had an irregular heart beat or pain in the past. But in the mean time the doctor asked me to log my blood pressure. And what I am seeing is scaring me a little.

My BP is normally around 117/70 but my pulse has been on the high side around 85.

But last night there was a good bit of drama at home and my Blood Pressure shot up to 150/100 and my pulse was 108. It stayed at that level for a while even after I relaxed so, I took Nitro prescribed by my Dr. It went down to normal within 20 mins.

Then today, I did my wii fit for less than 10 minutes and my BP went up to 144/82 with a pulse of 89. This time It did go back down as soon as I sat down and relaxed so I did not take any nitro.

SO the question is IS THIS NORMAL. I mean it may well be. I have never tracked my BP before. I know 150/100 is stage 2 high blood pressure by the charts. And a resting pulse should not be more than 100, and when I had the 150 I was not exercising (just stessed out) SO I am pretty sure that this is not a good sign. I am taking the record to my Cardiologist on Wednesday. But I am there for tests, so I do not even know if I will be able to talk to him.

Should I be worried, or am I just blowing things out of porportion?
As for not taking the nitro if I am not having chest pain. Believe me I was having chest pain.
As for external causes, doctor already ruled these out and that is why he is running the tests, Don’t drink, smoke, do drugs, no caffine, I certainly was exercising in his office or the previous drs office that found the same thing. He said it “looked” benigin but he also said he had to do further testing to rule out a blockage.
MIstake “I certainly was NOT exercising in the doctors offices”
AGAIN I am not using Nitro for blood pressure, it is for Chest pain. It just so happens when my blood pressure goes up, that is when the chest pain kicks in. I have been having chest pain for 3 weeks and it has gotten very intense, especally after I exercise.

The No 1 answer:

Answer by J B
You are blowing things out of proportion. Your blood pressure naturally rises with any activity or stressor to the body and when at rest, comes back into a normal range. Unless you are having chest pain, do not use Nitro for blood pressure control. It will lower your blood pressure temporarily but will also dilate all the vessels in your body which could give you symptoms you don’t need. If your doctor mentioned the word benign with the irregular heart beat, you need to stop stressing about this. Many, many people have palpitations (irregular beats) and most of them are benign in nature and are often caused by external causes such as smoking, too much caffeine, fatigue, stress, lack of sleep, physical exercise and some medications – to name just a few. And, once the external cause is removed, these irregular beats often go away. Your heart rate and blood pressure elevate in response to any muscle use in your body – this is perfectly normal so you need to stop stressing about this, get the testing done and find out (hopefully) that there is nothing wrong.

Why do People Develop High Blood Pressure?

Hypertension, or high blood pressure is a common but very serious medical condition that many people suffer from, often without even knowing about it. It’s a good idea to get regular checkups where your blood pressure is measured, as hypertension does not always have symptoms. If you are aware of the causes of high blood pressure it’s easier to avoid it, so we will now explore some of these.

Some people have underlying conditions such as adrenal or thyroid conditions that if left untreated can contribute to high blood pressure and hypertension. Hypertension can be caused as a result of a faulty thyroid or condition referred to as hypothyroidism wherein the thyroid isn’t producing the right amount of hormones. Problems in the adrenal gland can also cause your high blood pressure. The symptoms most related to thyroid issues or adrenal issues are fatigue, sudden weight gain, and joint pain. People don’t often realize they have these conditions for a large amount of time due to the fact that they can only be detected with medical tests. Taking a prescription medication regularly will reduce the symptoms.

Excessive alcohol consumption can be a cause of high blood pressure. Some people are confused because there is evidence that light drinkers are actually healthier than people who don’t drink at all, and it’s true that small amounts of alcohol may actually reduce your blood pressure. Yet evidence also shows that heavy drinking, of more than two glasses of an alcoholic beverage every day, has more negative than positive effects on your blood pressure and overall health. This issue is further complicated by the fact that many people have trouble limiting themselves when it comes to alcohol, and are better off abstaining. In other words, one or two drinks may be good for your blood pressure, but more than this has the opposite effect and should be avoided.

Sleep apnea is one of the lesser know causes of high blood pressure. This is a sleep disorder that makes it difficult to breathe normally when sleeping. Snoring, which is a symptom of obstructed breathing while sleeping, is often common among sleep apnea sufferers. Many sleep apnea sufferers are chronically tired because they are not getting restful sleep at night. Doing a sleep study at a sleep disorder center is the only way to diagnose this condition that mainly affects those that smoke and who are overweight. Finding out if you have this condition because sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease.

No matter what is causing hypertension, you should not underestimate how dangerous it can be. You should keep track of your blood pressure and ask your doctor for advice on how to control it. The causes and elements related to high blood pressure are varied, and we’ve only had room to cover a few of them. You can find a way to control your blood pressure, and with the help of your doctor you can figure out a plan that will lead to a healthier future.

What is a good multivitamin for someone with high blood pressure?

Question by unknown: What is a good multivitamin for someone with high blood pressure?
I am a 33 year old female who has high blood pressure and I take a prescription for that. I do not take a multivitamin and I really feel like I should start but I am unsure of what kind to start being that I have high blood pressure.

Any recommendations?

Most detailed answer:

Answer by cheermomgoteam
You want a multivitamin that is organic. If it is synthetic you’re body doesnt recognize it and won’t absorb it as well. Why take something if its just going to get flushed down the toilet? Here is a link to order organic. Plus, you don’t want fillers. you just want pure vitamins:)
