Why do vascular smooth muscle cells in arteries contract in response to high blood pressure?

blood pressure miracle

arag s asked:

When an artery experiences high blood pressure it has been shown that it contracts. But if contraction increases blood pressure on its own, doesn’t that increase blood pressure even more? Why do arteries contract in response to mechanical stress (high blood pressure)?

To hold in the pressure perhaps?

    That’s what I would think.

    I’m just guessing really.

I don’t know where you read that. Perhaps you misunderstood the author. If you are confused that’s a good thing, you have reason to be. The body works in a fairly logical pattern, the statement above is illogical as you pointed out. If you could give me context, the source, or perhaps the specific location in the body they are referring to then I’ll be able to help you further.
