What would cause an elderly persons blood pressure to go up and down in a short period of time?

blood pressure miracle

LilacGirl asked:

I am asking because my Grandfather was in the ER and they took his blood pressure in one room and it was very low… they moved him to another room and it changed within minutes to very high… is that normal?

  1. Dc3402 says:

That could be very normal… or not. You don’t mention whether he walked to the other room, whether it was an automatic machine or a nurse with a stethoscope, or even whether the same person took it both times. Add to that that we have no idea what he was in there for. Pain can cause wide fluctuations in B/P, and so can a nurse with ear wax. There are too many variables to give you an honest answer.

DC3402 is correct. Blood pressure can vary quite a bit from minute to minute for a number of reasons that have nothing to do with his actual physical condition. That is true at any age. Without more information it is not possible to answer your question. To get an accurate resting blood pressure it has to be take over a period of time and averaged. One very high blood pressure reading would only indicate that it should be taken again. That means having no outside stimulus such as anxiety or him seeing a real pretty nurse. Maybe his doctor should be made aware of your concern. You may have to be your grandpa’s health advocate. Make sure he is getting the treatment he needs.
