A question from
? 26 ? (:: What could happen if your blood sugar is over 500?
My daddy has dibeties and really bad health. He takes insulin and he has been doing his blood pressure chart for the past week. Everyday this week it has been around 125-370. This morning when he woke up he took it and it was like 522. He took it again and I think it might of been a little higher. Is this really bad? What could happen? Honestly. I’m like 15, and I don’t know anything about this stuff. Please help! thanks

That’s extremely high! He needs to see a doctor immediately to have his insulin regimen adjusted. Sounds to me like he needs more insulin. Is he on long acting (Lantus, Levemir) in addition with meal time (Humalog, Novalog) or is he only on meal time? Please encourage him to visit his doctor soon. Having your numbers that high takes a serious toll on your body in the long run, not to mention he could end up with something like DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis). Is he a type 1 diabetic or type 2? In the meantime have him drink lots and lots of water. He is probably extremely dehydrated at this point and then get him to the doctor soon! I wish you the best of luck. Please take care!

Do whatever you can to get him to the hospital. Blood sugar in the 500 can become immediately life threatening.

He needs to test for ketones. If he does not have ketone test strips then he needs to buy some. You can get them at any pharmacy without a prescription. If he has ketones then he MUST speak to his doctor.
This is a very serious matter. Your father should have called his physician immediately. Although some adults will tolerate remarkably high glucose levels it is never appropriate to ‘gamble’. Based upon the readings of 125 to 370 mg/dL your father’s diabetes is not well controlled. With insulin and a motivated patient good control is virtually always possible. He may require both basal and bolus insulin. Only analog insulin is appropriate for use at this time. Examples of basal analog insulin include determir (Levemir) and glargine (Lantus). Examples of bolus analog insulin include aspart (NovoLog), glulisine (Apidra), and lispro (Humalog). I do not approve of basal / bolus analog insulin combinations although 2 exist. If he is on any other form of insulin this may be his problem. It is very difficult for a 15 year old who loves their father to know how to be of help. I empathize with your circumstance. If I may be of further assistance please let me know. I wish you and your family the very best of health and happiness and in all things may God bless. JR
Your Daddy is testing his blood sugar not pressure.
Most of us know what to do if ,on occasion, we have a very high sugar such as your Dad.
He needs extra insulin.Unless he has passed out, no need to be in the ER.
