    1. Drink lots of water to maintain blood volume and avoid dehydration.

    2. Avoid overly hot showers or baths, which can cause the body’s temperature to rise.

    3. After resting or sitting, stand up slowly and carefully to help your body to adjust to the pull of gravity.

    4. Make sure to get enough sleep. Fatigue is also a contributing factor in hypotension, especially orthostatic hypotension.

    5. Eat small meals. Eating heavy meals can play a role in hypotension, since the digestion process requires more blood in the digestive tract. So, rather then eating three large meals eat many small meals to help the digestive system.

    6. Avoid alcohol.

    7. Avoid standing for long periods of time.

    8. Some experts recommend wearing stockings, which may help decrease the accumulation of blood in the lower limbs, which occurs when abruptly standing.

    9. If you have just begun a new medication, such as an anti-depressant, and have noticed lately that you feel faint or lightheaded upon standing, talk to your doctor. Some medications cause low blood pressure.

  2. Dr. B says:

Blood pressure in the lower range is actually a good thing as long as the person does not have symptoms of lightheadedness or dizziness. High blood pressure is worse, because it is a known risk factor for many conditions including heart disease and strokes. The easiest way to determine if you have low or high blood pressure is to have your blood pressure checked. You can have your blood pressure checked at the doctor’s office manually, because this is the most accurate. If that is not an option you can check it at a store that has a blood pressure monitor. Low blood pressure usually does not require treatment or dietary modifications unless the person has symptoms. Salt and fluid consumption can increase blood pressure. Caffeine and nicotine also increase blood pressure, but I would not recommend using them for this purpose. If symptoms are present, then you should be evaluated by your doctor.
