high blood pressure but no other preeclampsia symptoms. anyone elses experiences?
I’m being monitored for preeclampsia, currently have PIH [pregnancy induced hypertension] and I was wondering if anyone else is in the same boat?
I was diagnosed with PIH at 32 weeks, started labatelol and went back 33 weeks with my blood pressure still up. doubled the dose and put on bed rest. I’ve been monitoring my blood pressure at home [I'm an EMT] and its been kind of back and forth, still high at times.. but I have no other symptoms.
I didn’t test positive for protein with dip stick at the doctors office, but they’re having me do the 24 hour collection anyway.
I’m not swelling, but I do have a major headache…
Anyone else have a similar situation and go full term/deliver naturally? I’m so afraid of being induced!
thanks to everyone for answering!!
Kendra, I think it was me lol sorry for asking the question multiple times [over a few days]
I’m just really nervous!

YEs I had the same exact thing, it all happened at 32 weeks for me also. I had to stay at the hospital for two days thinking they were going to have to induce because my blood pressure was so bad. I did that 24 hour urine thing TWICE and it *****. Such a pain in the ****. After I left the hospital I had to go to the doctor once a week and non stress tests twice a week until delivery. Mine stayed PIH with lebatelol and strict bedrest, until I went for my 38 week appointment. My blood pressure shot up to 155/108 (close to siezing) and they tested my urine and there was that protein. It eventually developed into preeclampsia and I had to be induced. I made it to 38 weeks. I did not have any edema (swelling), but I did have constant horrible headaches and I did see the “fireworks” through the PIH phase. if you have to be induced then thats okay, it’s really best if it gets as bad as mine did. I was like you and so afraid of being induced, and when the doctor told me she was going to induce me the next morning I told her I did not want to, and then she explained everything that could go wrong if I went to 40 weeks, and after she explained it all, I was more then willing to be induced. Goodluck and an early congrats and try not to worry it will only make you stress and that can also raise your blood pressure.
Yeah I had PIH diagnosed for me at 28 weeks, my bp just kept going up at every visit, so I had to come in every week, *** in a jug for a whole day and it was sooo horrible thinking of them inducing my labor. I also had no other symptoms AT ALL, but I did start eating a low sodium diet and by 34 weeks it pretty much just dissolved on its own, and I delivered my baby at 38 1/2 weeks. One thing i noticed you said above though, about your headache. I did get headaches, but that’s a part of pregnancy, unless it agonizing I think its okay, Im certain you know allll the warning signs…
Here’s my answer from another similar question that someone asked… (I went through a similar situation)
I had high blood pressure readings at my OB visits, but they were otherwise normal at home, and I never had any symptoms of pre-eclampsia. I was taking Labetalol 3x daily at the same dosage, with the same low-sodium, bed rest at home kind of deal. This all started right around where you are now… 33 to 34 weeks. I also had to go in twice a week for a non-stress test just to make sure baby was okay (he was… and my bp was always normal at the hospital, as well.)
I was REALLY against being induced too, but all things considered I decided to agree to it at exactly 38 weeks. My labor was just fine, and so was my son. 15 hours of labor, half an hour of pushing, and he came out a totally healthy 8 lbs. 9 oz.
Based on what you’re describing, your doctor will probably want to induce you, too, once you’re closer to your due date. Of course the route you choose during your medical care is always your choice above anyone else’s (including your doctor… you can say no!) but personally if you get to at least 38 weeks and your doctor wants to do an induction, it might not hurt to have a little bit of an open mind about it, especially if your blood pressure is very high. If it is only marginally high, your doctor may be more willing to let you go longer. Speaking from experience though, it really wasn’t that bad, and my son is perfectly healthy. I’m 26 weeks with #2 right now, and if this pregnancy ends up taking the same course as the last, I’d be okay with it. Good luck!
The thing with PIH and pre-eclampsia is that there is a fine line between the two, and things can change very quickly. Just because your urine dip was negative doesn’t mean that things will be ok a week from now. Which is why you are on bedrest and being closely monitored.
Even if it never turns over to pre-e, sometimes it is necessary to induce if your pressures remain high. Not only are high pressures dangerous for you personally, but your baby can fail to thrive as high pressures reduce placental circulation and can cause growth restriction.
If things keep going as they are and baby is measuring appropriately, odds are they will not induce and you can let labor begin naturally. But, if induction is necessary, know that it is the best thing for you and your child. Inductions aren’t as scary as they may seem. Either way, labor is not exactly a pleasant experience.
Good luck!
I developed high blood pressure during pregnancy – week 32 I think. The increase in blood pressure did result in alot of swelling and a few trips to the hospital but never developed into preeclampsia.
I was put on bed rest and had weekly doctors appointments and stress tests. I also took several 24 hour urine test – all negative.
I never took any medication for the high blood pressure – just watched it very carefully.
I was induced at 39 weeks – I was scared at the time but looking back it was a great decision and I would do it again.
