Does my personal experiment mean my high blood pressure is mostly stress related?

blood pressure miracle

Jessica B asked:

I’ve had blood pressure that has slowly been creeping up, I’m only 22 with very little family history of high blood pressure. I am a good deal overweight but I don’t eat terribly, but it is an area that I could work on. Today I measured my blood pressure with a monitor, and at first it was 158/102 which is very high. I was told to relax for at least 10 minutes before taking it, so I put on really relaxing music and laid down for 10 minutes and then measured while listening to my music. My blood pressure came all the way down to 138/93, which isn’t good but much better for only 10 minutes of relaxing. Does this show my blood pressure may be mostly related to being overstressed?

Still a little high, but its the norm that counts, keep monitoring over the next week or so, and use more than one machine, most Walmarts, Target and CVS, even some Walgreens have the machines, and the cards to keep record. Keep a record of your bp, when its high, low, you get the picture. Also of what your eating and how your feeling (stressed) along with the readings, average the readings out, if they are still high, go to the dr, see what they say. Try not to be to nervous about it, it will only cause you more stress. The 93 is the high number 138 is ok, but could be much lower, but is often a reflection of stress in bp. Good Luck.

Depends on if you are stressed to begin with. I would expect you to bring it down while relaxing, and it sounds like forming good habits in keeping stress reactions down all the time will help. But you started pretty high and are still high. But it also suggests that, with weight loss and diet changes, you might get away without medication.

Still too high for 22. But, you have hit on one thing. If you meditate it helps allot more than blood pressure. Meditation has been used for years as a medical tool in helping people with high blood pressure all the way to people that are going through chemotherapy. It’s a part of holistic healing. If you take off the weight then it will come down and you’ll also have allot more energy. I’ve been where you are. I was overweight for along time until the medical problems started to build up the older I got. I knew better as a nurse, but also I was a foodaholic. My enemy was to reward myself with food every time I did something good for someone else, which with my job wasn’t hard at all. And I used allot of fruit and things that are supposed to be healthy to eat. Anyway, I finally went and had the lap band surgery. One year and 90 pounds ago I not only have more energy, but beat almost every single medical problem. The only 2 left are do to injuries and not my health. Anyway I hope this gives you just one more perceptive to look at. Good luck with whatever you decide. It’s your life.
