baby #2 on board! 5-29-10<3 asked:
I am 36 weeks pregnant and being monitored on bedrest for possible preeclampsia as of one and a half days ago. My blood pressure readings are sort of all over the place, the highest I’ve had were 141/87 and 137/96. Im a little confused because on both of the readings, only one of the numbers have been alarming ( anything over 140/90 is considered hypertensive.) Anyone with preeclampsia experiences know anything about this? thanks!

No, that’s really not common for preeclampsia. The blood pressure should go up and stay up. What this says is that you are managing this fine by taking it easy and staying in bed. In my experience, I haven’t seen a bp like this be a problem, it is pretty common at the end of the pregnancy for a bp that has been low to go above average.
Remember that diet can affect PIH, so eat lots of protein, stay up on the water. You can google Brewer diet if you want more information, but it really has helped me through six pregnancies after suffering tremendously with my first (BP of 240/180)
bloop pressure reading are usually way higher than that for pre-eclampsia. thoes reading are what would be considered normal for the average person (maybe borderline) i wouldnt worry too much from these readings. if your ordered to stay on bedrest until the baby is born, then do just that. if you get up into the 200′s then id go to the hospital.
They are looking at the bottom number the most and it will never be consistant. I was having reading that were everywhere.. Some were 120/95 others were 150/100. The bottom number should be under 80 or less and that is considered safe so to speak. I was preeclampsic in my 1st pregnancy.. and starting to show some signs in this one at 32 wks. I was being monitored about a week ago and could not leave til my bottom number was under 80. My last reading was 110/65 and then off to home I went. But you have to relax alot and stay in bed as much as possible.. this is very important to baby and you.. either one of you can have a stroke b/c of it.
Yes, there are always normal fluctuations in blood pressure, and these can be even more pronounced if you have preeclampsia, or if you are borderline and heading that way.
The BPs you stated are actually very close — in the same range, and slightly elevated.
After lying on your left side for half an hour, your blood pressure may be completely normal. Then if you decide to go rushing around cleaning, it may shoot up very high, and very quickly. That’s why it is so important to maintain bedrest, if that’s what they are telling you to do. It really can help! a loIt also depends on your lab tests, how bad your edema is, and how much protein is in your urine. Bed rest helps these effects, too.
Good luck!
I had severe preeclampsia during my pregnancy. I was put on bedrest at 25 weeks for symptoms and suspected pre-e, but they didn’t really diagnose me until I was in the hospital at 27 weeks (and then 3 days later I had an emergency c-section to save my daughter’s and my own lives). Mine was REALLY bad. My blood pressure was a bit unstable from about 20 weeks…going up and down, etc. But from about 25 weeks on it just stayed high. And while I was in the hospital, my blood pressure was SO insanely high, which is why they decided to take my daughter by c-section then.
You could still have pre-e. But honestly, why aren’t you discussing this with your doctor? You should be able to call them, or even a nurse or a hospital, and discuss this and ask them what’s going on with you. I’m sure they told you things that could help bring your blood pressure down…you should be LAYING down, sometimes they even suggest you lay on a certain side, stay away from stressful situations or people, limit your salt/sodium intake, etc. Do they have you on meds at all?
Unless all you’re looking for here is some support. In which case, there are lots of us women who have had it…some worse than others…and if you ever need to talk about it, feel free to email me!
I pray you have a healthy remainder of your pregnancy!
