Blood pressure averages?

Jackie asked:

My bp has been creeping up slightly, my doctor suggested I buy a bp monitor that automatically inflates itself so I can log my readings.

But should I keep track of averages on a daily, weekly or monthly basis?

Do blood pressure averages mean anything or is it just individual readings that count?

You always hear about natural cures for diseases, but you never hear of what they are or even the treatments. I’ve heard there is a natural cure for Herpes, diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, and hypertension, but no one ever seems to know what they are, or where they can be found. I have even read that book ‘Natural Cures “They” Don’t Want You to Know About’ by Kevin Trudeau and he just beats around the bush. Is there anyone out there with solid evidence and answers?

My doctor prescribed Adalat to control my hypertension because I’m planning to have a baby soon? Anybody ever taken it while pregnant. Let me know how it was. Thanks.

I had an endometrial biopsy 5 days ago. The dr. performed it based on abnormal bleeding for the last 4 years, and the results of a sonogram that indicated unusual thickness in the lining of my uterus as well as a cyst on one of my ovaries. I am 45 years old with two children in college. So no more children for me. I also suffer from extreme hypertension which I take medication for daily. I’m not overweight and work out quite often. But I am going crazy right now waiting for the results of this biopsy. Does anyone out there really think that I may have endometrial cancer? I’ve never taken birth control pills because of my hypertension. And right now, I’m just very frightened. If anyone out there has had a similar experience, I would love to hear from you. Thank you.

My blood pressure is always kind of high?

danny asked:

I am a 12 year old boy and my blood pressure is always kind of high. I take my blood pressure every day and it is usaullly about in the 130’s over 80. I play sports and get kind of dizzy when I do. High blood pressure runs in my family and I’m scared. I think that I have hypertension, so I’m going to a doctor soon. Do you think if my blood pressure keeps being high that I will die soon? Do you think I will have a heart attak soon. Remember I’m just 12. Please tell me if you think I will have a heart attack

I’m 30 weeks and now my Dr. wants to monitor me weekly now for high blood pressure but I didn’t think I was doing that badly(125/85). Whatever is best for baby of course but I was just wondering when is it beyond “high blood pressure” and go to preeclampsia? Anyone else have this issue?

Monitoring your blood pressure at home will help you to see how well your lifestyle changes and medications are lowering your blood pressure. The more you can reduce your blood pressure, the lower your risk of heart attacks and strokes in later life. UK charity the Blood Pressure Association has a clinically validated home blood pressure monitor that gives accurate and reliable readings. For every monitor, the charity receives £5 to fund its work.

Can anxiety contribute to high blood pressure?

Michael asked:

A friend of mine recently decided to go to rehab for alcholism. He’s been there for three weeks and now his doctors say he can go home on Tuesday. However, for the last week, his blood pressure has been through the roof. (Before he went to rehab, his BP was normal, but his cholesteral was high) His doctors haven’t said why his blood pressure is so high. I was wondering if it’s because he’s anxious about going home, where he will have to deal with a lot pressure from his former friends, his “drinking buddies” .

You’re probably familiar with the blood pressure cuff your doctor uses but do you really understand what he is measuring?

Blood pressure is the force that the heart places on the walls of your blood vessels when it pumps and relaxes. When the heart pumps the pressure goes up and this is called systolic pressure. When the heart relaxes, the pressure goes down and this is know as diastolic pressure.

Normal blood pressure is considered to be 120 systolic and 80 diastolic. If your diastolic is between 80 and 100 you are pre-hypertensive. If it is over 100 you have hypertension and will probably be placed on drugs.

If you have a high diastolic reading you probably have a high systolic reading as well. It really doesn’t matter though because high diastolic pressure carries the same life threatening conditions as systolic.

High diastolic blood pressure is more common in young adults, teens and even children. It’s been suggested that birth weight may have a direct connection to this condition.

The three principal cause of high diastolic pressure are:

Obesity: Overweight people with a high Body Mass Index place additional pressure on the arterial system creating higher blood pressure. Excess fat and cholesterol can stiffen the arteries and clog them with plaque causing the heart to have to pump harder. Diet: One of the biggest contributors to HBP and the principal cause of obesity, is an unhealthy diet rich in salt, saturated fats and trans-fatty acids. A diet with these characteristics can damage blood vessels at the cell level. This diet encourages oxidation which weakens cells, hardens arteries, and creates plaque. Smoking: Putting nicotine in your body is not a good idea. Nicotine constricts the blood vessels increasing blood pressure and also causes the heart to beat faster. So if you are an overweight smoker who thinks Burger King is gourmet food, you are probably in real danger.

The obvious solution is to set aside time to exercise. Thirty minutes of walking or cycling will have an immediate impact on your blood pressure.

Eat a diet rich in antioxidants and vasodilators. Antioxidants fight free radicals which cause oxidation. Vasodilators allow the blood vessels to dilate and handle the pressure more efficiently. Fresh fruits and vegetables are great sources for both these characteristics.

Just say no to tobacco.

The more our society tries to make life convenient the further we get from the natural fuels that our body requires. Unfortunately, convenience and automation have a cost. That cost is nearly 70 million Americans with high blood pressure. Now is the time to take responsibility for your health and make the changes you need to ensure a longer healthier life.

Your heart will thank you.
